Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam duo have delivered an all-time classic like Nayakudu and many have been waiting for them to re-unite from past 4 decades. Now, they have come up with Thug Life, along with Simbu and Trisha in this one. The movie released today and let's discuss about it in detail.

Plot:
Rangaraya Shaktivel (Kamal Haasan) is a powerful gangster in Delhi and he saves Amar (Silambarasan), a news paper boy during a shootout in Mumbai. Amar looses his father due to Shaktivel's elder brother Manikkam (Nasser)'s cruel act. Hence, Shakti saves Amar and promises him that he will find Chandra, Amar's sister.

Years pass, Amar becomes younger brother to Shakti and they both grow a close bond so much so that it is hard to differentiate between them. But during one attack by Sadanand (Mahesh Manjrekar), Shakti doubts Amar's involvement. In retaliation, Amar shakes hand with Manikkam and tries to kill Shakti. What happens next? Watch the movie to know more.

Analysis:
Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan are known for delivering such classics that people start expecting more and more from them. Something novel and innovative seems to come naturally to them but they seem to have resorted to an age old story with very lean screenplay.

The narrative feels too lethargic and very basic that you wonder if these two greats have really worked together on the script or did they just pass off something workable. Their touches show up here and there but the film is like flesh and muscles assembled together without a skeleton.

Kamal Haasan performed well within the limitations of the character. Being his long time dream to make this film, many expect it to be a much better than just a generic gangster film. Simbu is good and he did his job well. Trisha couldn't really deliver her best in this role.

Abhirami, Ashok Selvan seem wasted. Joju George also got a forgettable role. AR Rahman's music is not that effective. Technically, the de-aging and framing is again good. Still, not the work that we expect from a Mani Ratnam film. Overall, the movie feels too lethargic and is a very generic and disappointing gangster drama.

Bottomline:
Not what we expect from Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan combination.

Rating: 2/5
